Mrs. Colquitt

Scholé and Ludus

Scholé is the Greek word for school and it means leisure. Ludus is a Latin term for school and it means game. If we go back to these roots, we learn that the ancients believed learning happens restfully and with play.

We incorporate both of these classical attributes at Telos to allow children to restfully acquire knowledge and escape the hurried culture in which we live, and to solidify learning through lots of review games. I have encouraged the children to slow down and focus more on neatness and offering their best work, not their fastest work. Fifth graders are notoriously competitive, which is great for games!, but rushing through work does not honor God or contribute to their learning. I have added "neatness" to our weekly executive functioning and service competition. Ask your child which game he or she enjoys most. Have a lovely weekend!
