Week of Oct. 5

Mrs. Colquitt

Field Trip and Viking Party!

In honor of Leif Erikson day and the conclusion of our study of The Vikings by Elizabeth Janeway, we painted Viking shields, had a modern Viking battle, and feasted on Viking stew. Humanities is my favorite course because we combine history, literature, and geography for a well-rounded understanding of the who, when, where, what, and why. We must know the geographical and historical context in which our literature is based to more fully engage with the story. Combining art, food, and action into our studies engages different parts of the brain to help the literature and timeline come alive.

In addition to a fun and full conclusion in humanities, we ventured out to Ashton Gardens to observe God's incredible creation in plants. The scholars were able to quickly complete their Bingo game as we made our way to the Secret Garden, where the scholars sketched in their science notebooks. After reading about the details of roots and plant structure, we enjoyed the opportunity to see how these intricate details create vast beauty in our world.

This coming week we will use microscopes to look "inside" plants and consider God's design in the world. We will pair Matthew 6 with our observations to consider how much God cares for us when he takes so much care of the natural world.
