Modeling Weathering

Middle school and high school students finished the quarter strong with exams and experiments!

Earth science scholars modeled mechanical and chemical weathering using sugar cubes. Shaking the sugar cubes mimics the abrasion of rocks against each other in nature as they are transported by water, wind, gravity, and ice. Crushed sugar cubes dissolve faster in water compared to whole sugar cubes, modeling the rising rate of chemical weathering in cracked or porous rocks. In these experiments, students also learn the importance of clearly displaying experimental data in tables and critically thinking through results.
