Good Arguments and Great Writing

Two things stood out to me in class this week. The first was when I heard the students live out an example of "good arguing." Every parent knows there are arguments children will have (especially siblings!) that serve absolutely no purpose. This week there were arguments in 4th grade...but the good kind. There were debates, discussions and downright arguments over...math. As the students played a new math game, they had to prove that their equation, and therefore their right to win points, was valid.  They had to convince unbelieving peers that their answer was correct and that they had solved the problem. Sometimes their friends listened. Sometimes they didn't. Either way there were many "good arguments" in class as they lobbied to prove their work was right.

The second thing that struck me this week was how far they have all come as writers. As I graded some of their latest work, I loved the growth I could see. They are learning to express their ideas clearly and creatively, a skill they will need no matter where life takes them. We took some time to enjoy hearing a few students read their latest stories today, which you will see pictured below.

Finally, I wanted to share Noel's perspective on our new logo and motto. She drew the beautiful picture shown below once we came back from our assembly. I love that this environment we're seeking to cultivate offered her the time and space to create something so meaningful. And I think she has a future in marketing!
