Week of Nov. 3

Mrs. Myers

Only God! In all things...

We had so much fun learning the parts of the body in Latin this week. Not only did the students learn the names of a few body parts (ask them if they can sing "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" in Latin!), but they also learned how to tell each other to extend and contract them.

Another highlight of the week was our attempt to create "craters" on the surface of "Mars." Playdough simulated the surface of Mars and a few rocks represented meteorites. We threw the "meteorites" at "Mars" to see what effect they would have, and then did it again with plastic wrap over the playdough to show how an atmosphere protects a planet. Sadly, the wind wreaked havoc on our experiment, and it didn't turn out exactly as planned. But the students still enjoyed throwing the rocks!

A quick reminder to have your student choose a book for their next book report. They will be due on December 11th!

We finished up the week with Thankful Thursday. Before having the students write things that they were thankful for in their own lives, I read them an excerpt from the book The Hiding Place. It describes two sisters' determination to live boldly for Christ in a Nazi prison camp. While there, they are challenged to live out God's instructions to "...give thanks in all circumstances," (1 Thess. 5:18). Corrie wants to resist when her sister Betsie insists they give thanks for the fleas that infest their barracks. She is sure that there is nothing good about the nasty little creatures. She reluctantly agrees and prays with Betsie to thank God, even for the fleas. And what they come to learn is that the fleas are what keep the guards out of their barracks so that they can hold Bible studies. Only God could use those tiny pests for good.

After reading that, I encouraged the students to remember that, no matter what our circumstances are like, there is always something to be thankful for.
