Character Building and Castles
This week in 4th grade we tackled some tough topics. As we are finishing our History book, The Shining Company, we read about soldiers who were sent on a hopeless mission, a king who was faced with an impossible choice, and unceasing loyalty. I asked the students to think about and respond to the question of what they would have done if they had been one of the soldiers in the Three Hundred. Those soldiers were given the choice to ride away from the last battle, with the possibility of survival, or to ride into the battle and towards certain death. Why pose such a question to 10 year olds, you might wonder? Because in wrestling with such ideas, it provides students opportunities to build their character, to think about the importance of virtues and where they might need growth, and to wonder what they might do in hard situations. This is all part of what we hope to build in our students here at Telos.
On a lighter note, we had some fun kicking off our study of castles with a little competition. Each group of students was given a small supply of objects and tasked with building the strongest castle possible. We tested them by piling books on top. The winner held up 50 books! Congratulations Sam and Harper, our future architects! :)
