Week of Sept. 23rd

Ms Bisbee

Natural History Museum!

This week, the 2nd graders had their first field trip to the Natural History Museum! We explored Native American culture in Utah, the biology of the Great Salt Lake, and learned about life in ancient Utah. The biggest hit, by far, was the earthquake simulator!

Subject Breakdown

Here’s a glimpse of what we’ve been working on in other subjects:

  • Math: We've been learning how to add and subtract numbers within 100. After one more review lesson, we will have our first math test next week.

  • Phonics & Spelling: This week, we focused on reading and spelling words where the letter "s" sounds like "z." We also learned about the suffix "-less" and reviewed the 1-1-1 rule.

  • Reading: This might have been the favorite class of the week! We explored how London has evolved over time and what it may have looked like when Squanto visited. We also learned about the history of the London Bridge, and while it’s never actually “fallen down,” it has been rebuilt at least five times (if not more).

  • We also completed our book report presentations and I was so impressed by everyone's presentation skills and projects! The students did great!

  • Science: We discussed human-made versus natural objects by comparing and labeling different items.

  • History: After learning about the different Southwestern Native American tribes in Utah, we read a traditional Shoshone folk tale. Soon, we’ll be discussing Columbus and the discovery of the Americas!

Important!

Due to the field trip, we only had two days to work on the current spelling list. As a result, the spelling test scheduled for Thursday, 9/26, has been moved to Thursday of next week, October 3rd. We will continue reviewing our current word list, along with several words that many students missed on the last test taken on Thursday, September 19th. I will send these words home with your child on Thursday for review over the weekend. There will be no new spelling list sent home this week.
