Week of Sept. 2nd

Mrs. Myers

Cat's eyes, chivalry, and snake!

This past week was chock full of learning and listening, drawing and calculating. The students completed the first chapter (which was actually chapter 2 in the book) of the math text and did very well on the quiz. Each afternoon we spent time playing different math games that challenged their mental math skills as well as their knowledge of math facts. If you haven't heard about the game called SNAKE yet, hopefully you will soon!

In preparation for creating Science Fair projects later this year, we began learning about the steps of the scientific process. We did a simple experiment to show why cat's eyes seem to glow in the dark and used those steps to follow the scientific method.

Some of our History discussions focused on the pros and cons of the "Rule of Law." We learned about the knights' Code of Chivalry and talked about whether it was still a valid concept today. After talking about Sir Gawain in "King Arthur" we compared the version that we're currently reading to a tongue-in-cheek retelling called "The Adventures of Sir Gawain the True" by Gerald Morris. It's a very funny take on what might have happened if the knights hadn't been chivalrous!

To accompany our History lessons your scholars are learning to draw a map of Africa, Europe and Asia from memory. We are focusing on using the "Great Circles" (the Equator, Prime Meridian, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle) to place the continents in their correct positions. It has been exciting to see how much more accurate they are able to be after only a few days of practice!

We ended the week in the way I hope to each week...by expressing our thankfulness for the many blessings we have. I shared with the students a story about Corrie ten Boom and how she learned to give thanks for something very unexpected during WWll. Ask your student to share it with you; it's truly amazing!
