Week of Sept. 16th

Mr. Heise

Cold Snap!

The September cold snap was matched with an equal and opposite energy from our scholars. They are adamant about going outside for recess and have been running laps to keep warm. This increase in energy has been spilling over into students’ scholarship and this is good because our Latin studies will soon intensify as we begin Familia Romana. We’ve dipped our toes into chapter one and are already learning some useful phrases that help us decipher the Renaissance travel literature we’ve been engaging in history. We covered Columbus in time for Columbus Day on October 12 and now turn to the rich political and social ferment of ideas in the early American colonies.

Geometry students are struggling through two column proofs admirably and I’m interested in introducing some coding, hands-on visualizations and readings from Courant’s What is Mathematics? to practice modern uses of mathematical thinking and keep algebra skills fresh for upcoming SAT tests, calculus classes perhaps, &c. further study.
