Week of Sept. 16th

Mrs. Ni

Continents and Oceans!

This week in History we continued our study of continents and oceans by practicing our chant and continuing to label our maps. We also learned about the Declaration of Independence and played a game to help us understand taxes. We all agreed it was unfair for the King(myself) to tax them unfairly just to perform simple activities. In defiance, the students came up with their own declaration of independence!

For science discovery, we are learning through literature and have been reading about foraging and preserving. We read The Brambly Hedge Autumn Story as well as A Home in the Woods and were able to discuss how preserving food for winter exemplifies the virtue of prudence. How much fun we had making our own slow cooker jam! We discussed solids, liquids, and that jam is a colloidal mixture.

In Math exploration, we had the opportunity to discuss 3D shapes and about lines being curved or flat.  We discussed everyday uses for curved and flat lines, such as bridges and ramps. Those ideas were then set to practical knowledge by building bridges out of paper cups and popsicle sticks. The goal was then to see how many counting bears the bridge could hold. The class started this activity in groups, but after individual successes, decided to join forces and build a giant bridge for all of the bears!

Thursday morning, we were blessed to have Aspen’s grandmother visit our classroom to share a story with us.  We enjoyed listening to That’s When I’m Happy and chatting about all of the things that make our hearts happy. We are so thankful that she shared her time with our class.
