Trees, Leaves, and Pocahontas!
In preparation for our field trip to Red Butte Garden, the class spent time studying trees and leaves this week. Our first task on Monday was to read Fall Walk by Virginia Brimhall Snow. We then took our own fall walk and identified which trees we have on our campus. We noticed the differences in their leaf shape and leaf size. Our study continued with creating watercolor leaves and then learning alongside our fifth grade friends at the Garden.
Because we are studying Early America, we began reading a book called Pocahontas by Ingri d’Aulaire. We learned the many ways that Pocahontas was instrumental to the colonists' survival in Jamestown. Taking inspiration from Native American basket weaving, the students began weaving their own paper plate basket. They really enjoyed this activity even though it was a bit of a challenge!
In Biblical Studies, we were introduced to Joseph by reading Genesis 37. We learned that Joseph’s brothers were so jealous of him that they sold him to a passing caravan and he became enslaved in Egypt. We discussed the importance of Joseph’s attitude towards his brothers, despite their cruelty. What fun we the class had making their own robes of many colors, complete with sequins.
Since all of the scholars have Ephesians 6:1-3 memorized, our new scripture memorization is Genesis 1:16. The students were also quite successful this month learning The Crocodile by Lewis Carroll. Ask them to sing it for you! Our October poem will be October’s Song by George Cooper.
