Reindeer Games

This week in Kindergarten we held a little STEM project and made a reindeer racetrack! The students learned how to make ‘reindeer rockets’ using balloons, straws and string. They also personalized their reindeer with googly eyes, pom pom noses, and antlers. The Reindeer straws were threaded onto string and the students held the end of the inflated balloon closed. 3-2-1 Whoosh! The air rushed out and sent the reindeer flying across the classroom! We discussed how air made the balloons move and why some may have moved farther than others.

In History, we traveled back in time to colonial times and discussed what life might be like for children in colonial America. The students were shocked to learn that there was little play time and lots of chore time! We made our studies come to life by making a basic cup and button game.

We had some more complex phonics lessons with the letter x, making the sound /ks/ and the letter q, making the sound /kw/. The class learned that q is always followed by u "because they are best friends”. As there are not many simple words that begin with qu, we practiced words such as quit, quad, and quip.

To nicely tie in to our phonics lesson, we had opportunity to practice using the letters qu when we studied Exodus 16 when God provides quail and manna to the Israelites!
