Autumn Gratitude
Here’s a peek into the Kindergarten’s first week of November!
The class will spend most of this month discussing gratitude and ways that we can show kindness to each other. That will be reflected in our monthly poem recitation, We Thank Thee by Ralph Waldo Emerson. In addition, our scripture recitation is Joshua 1:9, which reminds us that we can practice Fortitude!
As cooler weather approaches and the fall season wanes, the class decided to focus on some additional tree study. Although it’s a different season of harvest, we learned about tree sap and how it travels up and down the tree through straw-like structures. We also watched a video showing how to collect tree sap and the process used for turning it into maple syrup. We all felt sad that we didn't have any pancakes!
To accompany this tree study, we made wool felted acorns. Using warm, soapy water the students rolled and shaped pieces of wool into tiny little round shapes. Once they were dry, we glued them into real acorn caps. They were the cutest sensory and fine motor project!
During history study, the class read about Squanto, a member of the Patuxet tribe. After spending time in England and Spain as a slave, he made his way back to Massachusetts. It just so happened that the Pilgrims were struggling to create thriving crops and survive in an unfamiliar place. Squanto was instrumental in sharing his expertise and knowledge. He was a great example of a good friend, creating unity rather than division.
