Wonderful Week!
What a wonderful first week of Kindergarten! The class spent a lot of time learning procedures and courtesies that will be practiced throughout the year. Some highlights are “marshmallow mouths and toes” as well as pushing in chairs and cleaning the classroom at the end of the day.
For Phonics, this week has been an overview of mouth movements and the air that we use to make letter sounds. We have also started practicing proper formation of uppercase letters that use vertical and horizontal lines. While the students may know how to write these letters, it is important that they are forming them in a particular way with a proper pencil grip. This sets a foundation for future cursive and essay writing! As we move along in phonics and begin spelling, I will be sending home sheets that can help you reinforce concepts at home if you choose.
Our first lessons in Math were about sorting, classifying, and knowing the difference between things that are the same vs. similar. We accomplished this by using many manipulatives, magna tiles, and things of different textures.
The class learned about Christopher Columbus and his journey to the Americas. We were able to study maps to see his journey from Europe and how he traveled the wrong direction searching for India. In Geography, we talked about the United States of America, and that we live in the state of Utah.
The class seemed to bond well and enjoy spending time together as the week progressed. We are excited to see what adventures the next week will bring!
