Week of Aug. 25

Mrs. Sytsma

What a full, rich week in 6th grade!

What a full, rich week in 6th grade!  On Tuesday we had a special visit from Mr. and Mrs. Hofland, missionaries in Guinea, West Africa.  It was an eye opening experience for students and teachers to learn about life in the bush and what it looks like to bring the gospel to people who have never heard it before.

Our immersive Latin classes are in full swing!  4th-6th grade students practiced conversational greetings this week. The immersive approach is grounded in language practices of antiquity and modeled on the way we acquire our mother tongue, with an initial focus on listening, understanding, and speaking.

In math, we have reviewed order of operations and been introduced to exponent notation.  Students were tasked with putting their knowledge into practice with a thinking task entitled Four 4s, in which they attempt to create each number from 0-20, using only four 4s and a number of operations.  As you can see, we discovered there can be many routes, from simple to quite sophisticated, to achieve the numerical target.

Enjoy the long weekend! See you on Tuesday!
