Week of Jan. 12

Mrs. Systma

Great Week!

It's been a good week in sixth grade - we started with small numbers because of illness, but are ending the week with everyone healthy again.

Here's a snapshot of our week.

We have completed our studies about World War I.  We study history in sequential order because it helps our students understand causes and effects. Ask your student how WWI led to World War II.  Next up, we will take a brief look at the 1920's and the Great Depression.

In math we are exploring the relationships between fractions, decimals and percentages, and their practical applications to everyday life.

Rich discussions are going on in regard to The Giver, a novel about a community that has tried to insulate itself from pain by eliminating risk, choice, and pain from its citizens.  Through our conversations, we are exploring what it truly means to live a flourishing human life - a classical conversation that stretches back to antiquity.  Students are making great connections across subjects.

It's a blessing to work with your children each day.  Enjoy the long weekend!
