Flowers and Fibonacci
"The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together." Colossians 1:15-17
We often talk about function in science and purpose in life. One of our liturgy questions and responses is:
What is the chief end of man?
Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever. (Westminster Shorter Catechism)
"But 'to glorify God' is not man's chief end alone. All creation is swept into God's design. Every stone, every tree, every bird, every soul has a purpose: the glory of God." Thomas Brewer, Tabletalk.
The scholars copied and discussed Colossians 1:15-17 before we learned about the Fibonacci Sequence. From nature we can clearly see intelligently created order and purpose. Every scholar made a Fibonacci spiral up to the number 21, and some enthusiastically added more graph paper to create even bigger spirals. We reviewed flower structure by dissecting perfect flowers: lilies. It's incredible to see how the design of flowers perfectly supports fertilization and pollination. And what a blessing we have in seeing and smelling the beauty of God's creation!
