Mr. Gant
Ski Week!
What a week for Telos this has been! Our scholars have been diligently working throughout the third quarter. The Student Council planned some great Valentine’s Day celebrations. The younger and older students got to go outside to play “sticker tag” and enjoy some nice sugary treats.
In Middle School we have been studying World War 2, and students are reading about Pearl Harbor. In light of the Winter Olympics going on now, we decided to study the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The story of Jesse Owens was powerful. That young man bravely faced opposition for his race at home, because of racial segregation in the US, and abroad, because of Nazi-propaganda and persecution based on the myth of Aryan superiority. Despite all of these challenges, he proved to the world that the evil ideology of Hitler was not true. His athletic success and virtue were put on display for everyone to see that his black skin was not a flaw that made him less capable and less than human. His evidence? The fact that he was made in the image of God and the four gold medals that he took home that year.
In High School, we just began a journey of the soul. Dante’s Divine Comedy has invited us in to explore the depths of the human heart, confront our sin, and see our need for God. We have only just begun to read about his descent into Hell, but the High Schoolers are already making an impressive amount of connections to classical literature and to their own life.
Our Telos family had to say goodbye to one of our very own students. Cameron has been with the school since the beginning, and our upper school crew made sure to make him feel loved and celebrated as he transitions to a new school where he can continue to excel and accomplish his athletic goals. We have seen him grow, and we are praying for him and his family as they move on to what God has in store for his future!
Finally, right at the end of the school day, the forecast must have been just as excited about Ski-Week as the students were. As they were squirming in their chairs, the weather was changing, and snow began to fall as a way to officially welcome in the break. While it snowed for only a few minutes at the school, I hope that this is a good omen for our scholar-skiers as they enjoy their well earned time off of school. We cannot wait to welcome them back, but until then, enjoy the time off. Read a good book. Drink some hot chocolate or coffee (or both), and enjoy the rest!
