Mr. Gant
“NO ADMITTANCE EXCEPT ON PARTY BUSINESS.”
On September 22, Bilbo Baggins planned to celebrate his eleventy-first (his 111th) birthday party. He posted a sign at the entrance letting people know that only those celebrating the party were allowed. He wanted no funny business - or rather he wanted to be the only one at his party with funny business. At the end of his birthday speech, he slipped on the ring and disappeared. With this action, the story of The Lord of the Rings is set in motion. If you have not read it, you are in for a treat. If you have only seen the movies, we will still let you into our little Shire of Telos Classical Academy, but soon enough you will find yourself drawn to the coziest spot in your home, a warm drink in hand, captivated by Mr. Tolkien’s story. Enough of that for now.
On September 24, the Scholars at Telos Classical Academy celebrated their first Virtue Assembly. It was a moment for the students to show off what they have learned in the first quarter. Our Upper School students memorized the Nicene Creed with music, and as they sang it, their voices joined with the voices of Christians proclaiming these same tenets of the faith over the last 1700 years. Several students were recognized for their outstanding habits of prudence. In Upper School, Mara Barth was chosen as a young lady who gives thought to her steps and sets an example for her classmates to follow. There was a poetry recitation about next month’s virtue, temperance, by our younger students, complete with adorable hand motions. By far, the highlight of the event was the choreographed dance number for this year’s spirit song. What began as a few students dancing at the front, grew to a room full of students in the aisles and on the stage carefully performing this dance routine. At the very end, our Upper School students struck a pose and looked pretty cool, if I am allowed to say that as a completely unbiased Upper School teacher.
If you missed this assembly, make it a point to come to our next one. Our students are working hard to learn about America after the Civil War, the great battles of the Medieval world, and the story of God’s plan to save sinners throughout the Bible. Just remember, if you do decide to attend next month’s Virtue Assembly,
“NO ADMITTANCE EXCEPT ON PARTY BUSINESS.”
