Week of Aug. 25

Mr. Heise

Telos is back and bigger than ever!

"Telos is back and bigger than ever! About 20' by 80' bigger to be precise, with the addition of a building for our Upper School. Classes are off to a great start in the space and our scholars have been great about sharing the new classroom space efficiently and politely, and pitching in to help clean. The atmosphere is much more focused and it's good to have a little distance from the younger kids.

Latin teaching has already been notably more interesting and effective this year—thanks to our summer Latin training at the Polis Institute in Austin—where Telos teachers spent a week building conversational fluency in full Latin immersion. This has built our skill as teachers around using the language and connecting it to things we and students do in real life. One student put it very well last week: "I've been studying Latin for two years but until now I couldn't say a sentence about myself or things I do."

We've had a little delay getting power to all our devices in the new classroom. But the TV will be up and running soon which, along with our big whiteboard, will provide a great teaching setup for showing interesting visual examples of the math we're learning. I'm ready to hit the ground running with experiment- and application-heavy teaching in Algebra I and II. Quite excited about this! P.S. The math classes (7th grade and up) are going climbing at The Front in Salt Lake next Wednesday (Sept. 3), be sure to fill out the release waiver for your scholar before we go!

It's been a pleasure to meet your new scholars and welcome back familiar faces from last year. Looking forward to a solid year of learning and growing together!"
