Climbing at The Front
Excitement was high this week as the Upper School math classes went climbing at The Front to do team building, run math experiments, and "send the gnar" as climbers often say. We asked the questions "Does height correlate with climbing hard?" and "Does being excited (adrenaline rush) correlate more with climbing hard routes?" The students filled out surveys beforehand and we plotted the data in a scatterplot to find that height is at best neutral or slightly negatively correlated with climbing success, but being excited and willing to try hard does positively correlate with climbing success, more than height or (for our group) even prior experience.
Our young scholars really seemed to appreciate the legalistic nature of climbing with all its rules for knots and safety gear. They debated what counts as "sending" a route ( legitimately climbing it in good style), and got really into going around the gym saying the specific names for each type of hold (sloper, jug, undercling, pinch, Gastón, etc.)
I brought my nice camera and the kids photographed each other, capturing some great shots. Thanks to all the dads who came to support. Couldn't have made it happen without you.
