Fun at the Capitol

By George Colquitt, Hope McWhirter, and Delaney Moore

This week we went to the Capitol in Salt Lake City! We took a tour of the Senate and main Capitol buildings, and we were able to sit in on a bill passing in both the Utah House of Representatives and Senate. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed viewing the ancient artworks and precisely detailed statues. Much of the material coating the inside was Georgian marble. Mr. Holley, Senator Johnson’s intern, showed us places other people weren’t allowed to go like the underground tunnels below the House, Senate, and main Capitol buildings. Under the Capitol building, there is a large but short room with huge stabilizing pillars that make it so that in an earthquake, the building won’t fall. Something we didn’t know was that the building was made in 1916. We also met Senator Johnson, and we got to ask him questions like, "What bill was your favorite to work on.?" He really enjoyed working on a bill that updated the required courses at Utah State University. Overall, it was a great visit and we had so much fun!
