Phonics Fun and Arctic Science
We have been busy learning and exploring and we’re excited to share what the students have been working on in phonics and science.
In phonics, we’ve been learning an important spelling rule called the FLSZ rule. This says that if a one syllable word ends in f, l, s, z after a short vowel, we double the final consonant. We also worked on recognizing that the vowels sounds a, o, u change when followed by the letters ll. We read words such as ball, tall, roll, troll, full, pull. We have several sayings to help us remember. “All the boys are tall.”, “Roll the troll”, and “The bull is full”. Students practiced reading, writing, and sorting words with these patterns. We are truy working on building confidence and fluency as readers.
Even though we have no snow and warm weather, the class explored how Arctic animals stay warm in living in freezing cold places. We talked about animals such as polar bears, whales, and penguins. We learned that many Arctic animals have a thick layer of fat called blubber. To help us understand this concept, we did a fun scince experiment. First we put our hands inside a bowl of ice water and remarked on how cold it felt. Then we covered a ziploc bag completely in butter. We stuck our hands inside the bag and dipped it in the cold water again. We were amazed at how much warmer the water felt! The butter worked in a similar manner to blubber, providing insulation and blocking the cold.
Other topics explored this week include subtraction, Egypt, Ruby Bridges, and the virtue Piety!
