Learning from Rest
This week in Kindergarten we had the best time together! We worked hard to foster a spirit of kindness and joy in the classroom. Here’s a peek at a few things we explored.
In math, we moved on from the concept of number bonds to number sentences. We use games and hands-on fun to practice addition and see patterns within addition. We also started practicing our math facts! The students create flash cards in class and study them. Each day we have a math facts timed “test”. Their goal is to beat their correct answers from the day before. They will work through problems for addition within 10. The class thinks this is super fun!
In geography, we traveled to China in our imaginations! We learned about animals of China such as pandas, pangolins, and cormorants. We also sampled dumplings and took a virtual tour of the cities and towns of China. We practiced saying hello in Chinese as well.
In science, we tried an exciting experiment using water, ice, salt, and string. We put ice cubes in water, laid string on top of the floating ice, and sprinkled a little salt over the top of the string. After counting to ten, we gently lifted the string. The children were amazed that the ice stuck to the string! We talked about how the salt helps the ice melt and then the ice will refreeze, trapping the string. We then tried different ‘fishing’ with thread, yarn and a thicker twine. It was interesting to see which type of string required more effort to be successful.
What a successful and fun week we have had together!
