Week of Jan. 19

Mrs. Ni

Let Freedom Ring

This week in Kindergarten we have continued to grow together, while learning so many things!

The last few weeks, we have covered topics that surround slavery and the Civil War. The children learned that Abraham Lincoln was instrumental in ending slavery by signing the Emancipation Proclamation. We have studied Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. We also learned about the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments and that it was the official end of legally owning slaves in the United States of America and declared that all men were allowed to vote.

At Telos, we often talk about classical connections. This is when students tie a concept learned in one area of study to another area of study. During our study of China last week, we read a book based on a true story called Ruby’s Wish, in which we learned about a girl who desired to continue her education in a time when girls were not allowed to do so. Ruby was one of the first girls in China to continue her education at university. We discussed as a class how this relates to what we consider true freedom.

Other studies this week included short vowel fluency, addition, and making ice candles. Looking forward to our adventures next week!
